ORIENTATION

The Orientation Program seeks to enjoin the whole Seton community in ushering in its new members through various activities that will help the individual effectively adjust to his new environment.  The Student Orientation familiarizes the students with the school’s policies, services, personnel and student community to develop him into a more responsible, self-aware and confident individual.  Through the Parents’ Orientation, the school and the parents work together to create a helping relationship that will benefit the child’s development and progress.

After the Orientation Day, new students would  have been better prepared to join their respective classes on the first day of school.  Other activities like Homeroom and class periods,  as well as counseling sessions, serve as venues that can help monitor the progress of the new students during the school year.

As new personnel of the community, it is but natural for them to acquaint themselves not only with the nature of their jobs but also the policies and rules, facilities and services of the school.  The Orientation of Employees on Guidance Services presents to the ESS personnel the different guidance programs and their role in relation to these services.

With all of these activities put into place, new students, parents and personnel can better harmonize themselves with the Seton community.

STUDENT INVENTORY

Every student brings with him a wealth of information about his uniqueness as an individual and his similarities with others.  This guidance program effectively and efficiently records and stores these information: personal information, test profile, academic achievement, counseling records, medical records.  This information, which when properly interpreted can provide vital information for the guidance counselor, teachers and parents and  students themselves to guide and direct the student’s growth as an individual.  Teachers and parents are welcome to view the student’s profile upon permission of the Unit Head or Guidance Counselor.  Use of student’s profile for research purposes is also honored upon approval of written request.

HOMEROOM

The Homeroom is the family unit within the life of the school.  Composed of a class adviser and a group of students, they are bound together by common ties of friendship and understanding.  Activities and structured learning experiences in Homeroom are geared to orient them with the ESS culture, to enhance the student’s healthy relationship with themselves and their classmates, to reinforce values learned, to develop the student’s personality and to guide them in their career development.

COUNSELING ...the heart of the Guidance Program

Counseling is the heart, the most vital part of the entire guidance program.  The Counseling Program requires an awareness of the real-life environment in order to reveal the dynamic conditions, which include social, cultural, economic and political factors, especially the value structure.  Counseling is aimed at assisting an individual towards self-knowledge, self-realization and self-development by facilitating progressive improvement so that students can eventually solve their own problems unassisted.

In the GSU, one counselor is assigned to 2 grade levels.  The HS concerns require one counselor for each level.  They follow their level as the student are promoted.  This process will help the counselor monitor the development of the students.

Guidance counselors coordinate with subject teachers as to the routine counseling schedule.  Usually done in groups, the counselor builds rapport with the counselees to initiate openness, honesty and a helping relationship.

Students are not the only ones that benefit from of this program but teachers and parents as well.  Together with the counselors, parents and teachers can help the students gain the skills and attitude for his future success.

FOLLOW – UP

The school seeks that our students use their potentials to the fullest.  Guiding the students’ development, through the school’s personnel and services, must be constantly monitored, and the school must be ready to assist students both old and new, present or alumni, when needed.  As other industries are evaluated on their products and services, the students, graduates or non-graduates serve as one of the major sources of evaluation of the school.

Follow-up interview and surveys are conducted to new students and graduating students.  Given out between the third and fourth quarter of the school year, these surveys help evaluate the school services, facilities and personnel.

CAREER DEVELOPMENT AND PLACEMENT

Amidst the many job opportunities there are still people who land in a job they are not happy with and employers end up complaining about the inefficiency of their staff.  Such scenarios are caused mainly by men and women who were unwise and uncertain in their decisions when they were younger.  The Career Development Program of the school serves to help prevent the students from making the wrong choice for their future careers.

Together with the Homeroom, students develop a self-awareness of their interests, abilities, strengths and limitations.  Career counseling based on aptitude and achievement tests, and interest inventory surveys could further help the student equip themselves with the proper attitude and decision-making skills.

The Guidance Unit organizes an annual Career Orientation for the 3rd year and 4th year HS students.  Resource speakers from varying professions and representatives from the different universities and colleges are invited to the symposia and career fair.  Students become more well-informed of their college opportunities and career options.

TESTING

Evaluation is the most common means of assessing a student’s scholastic performance. he Testing program of the Guidance Unit aids in the appraisal of the student’s personality and academic performance for better self-understanding and self-direction.

Standardized tests, administered usually in groups, are given to our students to acquire quantifiable data describing different aspects of an individual.  These tests measure IQ, aptitude and personality among others.  The Guidance Unit also conducts testing to personnel and to referred students.

The Guidance Unit is affiliated with the following:

Philippine Psychological Corporation (PhilPsyCor)
Center for Educational Measurement (CEM)
Asian Psychological Services and Assessment Corporation (APSA)

INFORMATION

The Guidance Services seeks to provide the Seton community with a wide range of informational materials geared to assist the individual in deciding and planning effectively. The Guidance Bulletin, symposia, assemblies, the Guidance Center bulletin boards, handouts and other information campaigns addressing the common needs of students, parents and teachers are regularly given by the unit.

ENHANCEMENT

Learning is a continuing process and the classroom is not the only venue for more education and knowledge.  The Enhancement Program aims to identify the needs of students and personnel for further training.  In-house seminars conducted by the guidance personnel are held regularly.   External seminars from professional organizations also cater to the further education of the personnel.  The Guidance Services accommodates interns from the Psychology Department of different colleges and universities as a means of sharing professional ideas and experiences with future colleagues.

EVALUATION AND RESEARCH

Claiming to have derived useful benefits from the different services cannot prove the effectiveness of the program.  An objective basis for guidance services is necessary, thus the need for evaluation.  Guidance itself is not evaluated but its objectives, the instruments and methods used in guiding individuals and the personnel who implement the program.  The results of the evaluation become the basis for improvement of existing programs and the development of new ones.
